Handan Özmen Erol was born in 1978. She graduated from Yüzüncü Yıl University, Department of Art Teaching (Painting), in 2003. In 2005, she made her first attempt to establish a woodcarving workshop in Mardin, where over a three-year period she produced works in wood and stone carving, woodblock printing on fabric, and artistic mosaics using natural stone. Between 2006 and 2007, Erol provided woodcarving training within projects jointly carried out by İŞKUR, Public Education Centers, and the Police Department, aimed at reintegrating young people with substance abuse issues into society. In 2007, she trained craftsmen over a six-month period as part of the SODES Wood Processing Project and, during the same period, delivered jewelry design training to 60 women in Midyat, Mardin, within a European Union–supported program. She also conducted painting courses at various women’s centers and non-governmental organizations. Between 2010 and 2024, Erol worked as a painting teacher, substitute teacher, and master instructor at various institutions in Mardin, Bilecik, and İnegöl. In 2007, she participated in the Anatolian Culture and Food Festival (Civilizations Road – Anatolia Comes Alive in California) held in California. After closing her Mardin workshop in 2009 due to marriage, she reopened a studio in İnegöl in early 2024 with the support of KOSGEB. Due to economic fluctuations, she was forced to close the studio after one year. She currently continues her artistic practice from her home studio and works as a painting teacher at a private school.
