Hülya Dönmez was born on April 24, 1969, in Üsküdar, Istanbul. She completed her primary, secondary, and high school education in Üsküdar. After taking painting lessons from the artist Saadettin Çağlarca, she enrolled in the Traditional Turkish Arts Department at Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts, selecting tezhip (illumination art) as her main discipline. She studied Traditional Turkish Arts History with Prof. Dr. Uğur Derman, tezhip with Prof. Çiçek Derman, miniature with Dr. İnci Birol, and calligraphy with Prof. Muhittin Serin. In 1993, she received an achievement award for her diploma project, which was ranked second. Dönmez began her professional art career in 1996 with Hazar Art Gallery and participated in the Real Collection “21st Century Antiques” exhibition. She has since taken part in numerous national and international group exhibitions. During this period, she also started creating tezhip works on leather and various other surfaces. In 2000, she re-illuminated Hasan Rıza Bey’s Hilye-i Şerif for a private collection. In 2004, she joined the Ankara İbrahim Çeçen Foundation artists, contributing 37 pieces of Ottoman tughra on leather, from Sultan Orhan Gazi to Sultan Vahdettin, to Mustafa Kaya’s private collection. In 2005, she illuminated 40 Ottoman firmans and charters according to historical standards, preserving cultural heritage. In 2006, her work was included in the “Respect to Atatürk” collection. Dönmez continued her exhibitions in Turkey through Alpman Art Gallery with the “Golden Pages Ottoman Art Collection.” In 2013, she was awarded the State Artist certificate by the Ministry of Culture and participated in the 30th Anniversary Exhibition of Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts. Between 2007 and 2019, she taught tezhip at İSMEK. Her personal exhibitions are as follows: in March 2017 at Taksim Cumhuriyet Museum, in November 2017 at Caddebostan Cultural Center, and in November 2019 at Pendik Mehmet Akif Ersoy Cultural Center. Currently, Hülya Dönmez continues her professional practice at Pendik Municipality, offering specialized tezhip courses in her workshop. She works with traditional stone pigments and watercolors, staying true to classical tezhip motifs while producing original designs on various surfaces, including leather. Her works are permanently displayed at Şemse Sanat workshop. Hülya Dönmez is married and a mother of two.
