Akbaş was born in 1962 in Gaziantep. Starting from 1967, Akbaş worked as an apprentice with his master Mehmet Sıtkı Sezgin, and in 1978, he started working freelance. He continued his profession in Gaziantep, between 1985 and 1986 he worked in the Samanpazarı district of Ankara, and in 1993, he started living in Kavaklıdere, Muğla. Akbaş became a master instructor at Kavaklıdere Public Education Center in 2016, and so he continues to pass on his profession to future generations. He is married with two children and three grandchildren.
