Gürkan Pehlivan was born in Istanbul in 1970. He started his khatt studies with Fuat Başar in 1999 and received his thuluth and naskh licenses afterwards; and in 2015, he received his jali and diwani licenses from Khattat Turan Sevgili. Pehlivan participated in many exhibitions both at home and abroad, some of his works are in museums and private collections. He worked as a khatt instructor at at many institutions. Pehlivan wrote the scriptures of various mosques, he designs distinctive hilyas and unique stackings (originally called ‘istif’, means combining and stacking the letters in an artistic way). He is the first Turkish Islamic artsist whose works were sold by the world-known auction company Sothby’s twice. Some of the students Pehlivan trained are Mehmet Zeki Velioğlu, Deniz Çimen, Hacer Tepe, Mevhide Süheyla, Aydın Demir, Songül Köse and Emine Geçta.
