Born in Izmir in 1957, Karakaş graduated from Ege University Faculty of Business Administration in 1981. Between 1979 and 2004, Karakaş worked as a civil servant at Türkiye İş Bankası. She started her training in ceramics in 1998 at the workshops of Karşıyaka Kız Meslek Lisesi, and continued her training at Tüzüm Kızılcan Ceramic Workshop between 2004 and 2014. Between 2006 and 2007, Karakaş took jewellery training from Türkiz Çam, glass bead making courses from Ulli Eger at the Glass Furnace in 2007, glass moulding courses from Ebru Susamcıoğlu in 2009, glass figure courses from Christian Arnold, Julie Anne Denton and Sally Carver in 2011 and jewellery courses from Ismail Kaptanoğlu in 2012. Karakaş continues to produce artworks in the workshop she established in her home in 2007, trains students, and has participated in many exhibitions, workshops, festivals and events since 2009.
