BASKETRY

Basketry: For carrying various materials baskets made of branches, reeds, canes, stems of wheat are used. Baskets can be with or without handles and people who weave baskets are called basket maker.  Sometimes it is called a saddle basket, a laundry basket, or a crate. In the basket production, the basic material is thin long strips which are removed from the tree branches. The basket, which is formed by means of vertical branches in the desired form, is circularly knitted with branches extending from the bottom of the frame to the upper part. The knitted parts are squeezed with a hammer. After completion, if desired, various patterns are painted first, then varnished. Nowadays, baskets are being produced in the regions like Kastamonu, Karamürsel, Trabzon and Rize.
