Gülnur Duran was born in Istanbul in 1962. She graduated from Marmara University (MU) Atatürk Education Faculty Painting Teaching Department in 1984, and started working as a research assistant at MU Fine Arts Faculty Traditional Turkish Handicrafts Illumination-Miniature Department in 1986. Duran completed her graduate studies at MU Institute of Social Sciences in 1990 with her thesis themed “16th Century Heading (called ‘serlevha’ in Turkish) Illuminations of the Turkish Mushafs at Süleymaniye Library”, and her proficiency in art/doctorate in 1996 with her thesis themed “Ali Üsküdârî’s Motif and Style Understanding”. She received Assistant Professor title in 1997. Duran started taking illumination classes at Kubbealtı Culture and Art Foundation Workshop in 1983; she received an illumination license from Prof. Çiçek Derman in 1987, and one from Dr. İnci A. Birol in 1991.
