İnci Ayan Birol was born in Istanbul in 1942. She is a graduate of Istanbul University Faculty of Science Department of Mathematics. Birol worked as an instructor at Marmara University Fine Arts Faculty (MUFAF) Traditional Turkish Handicrafts Illumination-Miniature Department. She did a Proficiency in Art at Selçuk University Institute of Social Sciences Illumination Department, and received Assistant Professor title at MUFAF Traditional Turkish Handicrafts Department in 1992. She gave undergraduate and graduate courses in illumination-miniature branches as a founding professor at the Traditional Turkish Handicrafts Department at Selçuk University Fine Arts Faculty between 2001-2006. She took private classes in the master-apprentice way from Prof. Süheyl Ünver between 1958-1970, from Muhsin Demironat between 1974-1983 and from Rikkat Kunt between 1976-1986; and received licenses from Süheyl Ünver and Rikkat Kunt. Birol founded Group Nokta with her students in 2000. With Çiçek Derman, they published the book named “Motifs in Turkish Decorative Arts” in 1991; and the book named “Pattern Design, Drawing Technique and Varieties in Turkish Decorative Arts” in 2008. Birol participated in many exhibitions and conferences both at home and abroad.
