Kaya Üçer was born in Istanbul in 1965. He graduated from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University (MSFAU) Fine Arts Faculty Traditional Turkish Arts Illumination-Khatt Department in 1986, completed his graduate studies at MSFAU Illumination department afterwards, and graduated from the proficiency in art (doctorate) program in 1992. Üçer completed the Palace Workshop Course opened at Topkapı Palace by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and received his certificate in 1984. He continued the art of kalem işi with the courses and seminars he gave at his workshop named Atölye. Üçer did restorations, conservations and new applications on many old structures both at home and abroad. He participated in many exhibitions, and has been giving kalem işi classes at MSFAU Fine Arts Faculty Traditional Turkish Arts Department since 1993.
