Dilan was born in 1982 in Cizre. He was introduced to the art of Karagöz (traditional Turkish shadow play) in 2001, after he started working with the Karagöz master Cengiz Samsun in 2004. In 2009, he created his own Karagöz play curtain and stepped into the mastery of Karagöz. He attended the Karagöz course organized by Unima Istanbul in 2010 and met the greatest living Karagöz masters: Tacettin Diker, Metin Özlen and Orhan Kurt. In addition to what he had learned before, he took Karagöz production and performance lessons under the guidance of the masters. He played Karagöz in front of three important masters and was found successful. In 2012 he was selected as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Carrier by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. He is a member of Union Internationale de la Marionnette (UNIMA) and Karagöz Puppet Foundation. In 2017, he was awarded the Tacettin Diker Special Award by the Puppet Foundation. The artist mostly produces Karagöz plays for adults, and performs the plays that he writes. His Karagöz plays aimed at children are called Elixir, Karagöz’s Shadow, Computer, Karagöz’s Color, and the plays aimed at adults are called Karagöz Wanted-Işkırlak, Karagöz Wanted-Father, Grave Digger, and Abduction from Üsküdar.
