Arkın Ongan was born on July 1, 1978, in Enschede, the Netherlands. He completed his primary, secondary, and high school education in Manisa. He received his bachelor’s degree from Manisa Celal Bayar University, Faculty of Economics, and completed his master’s degree in Traditional Turkish Arts at Necmettin Erbakan University in 2024. He began his calligraphy training in 2004 with the late calligrapher Osman Kılıç. After a short period of practice due to his master’s health conditions, he continued his studies in 2006 with calligrapher Yusuf Sezer, focusing on naskh script, and received his ijazah in 2016. From 2010 onward, he studied thuluth, naskh, ruq‘ah, and ijazah scripts with calligrapher Muhammed Enes Huri and completed his ijazah in 2024. In 2009, Ongan began teaching Islamic calligraphy at the Manisa Municipality MASMEK Course Center and has since taught at numerous public and private institutions. In 2014, he co-founded the Manisa Traditional Arts Association with his wife, Suna Ongan. Since 2016, he has served as a consultant for calligraphy-related projects at the Manisa Provincial Directorate of Culture. In 2018, he began teaching calligraphy and providing project consultancy at the Manisa Manuscript Library. As of 2020, he has been a member of the Advisory Board of the Manisa and Its Region Traditional Handicrafts Research and Application Center at Manisa Celal Bayar University. In the same year, he was appointed Deputy Director of the Center for Research and Application of Turkish History and Culture of Manisa and Its Region and became responsible for the Manisa Mevlevi Lodge. By 2024, Ongan had participated in a total of 27 solo and group exhibitions. His works are included in the collections of the Manisa Health Museum, Manisa Mevlevi Lodge, and İzmir Paper Museum, as well as in numerous private collections in Turkey and abroad. He currently serves as a lecturer at Manisa Celal Bayar University and continues his calligraphy practice at his private studio in Manisa.
