Alay was born in 1977 in the Devrek district of Zonguldak. Alay's father Raşit Korum is a master maker of walking sticks as well as the author of the book Baston Tarihi (Devrek’ten Bastonla Tarihe Bakış). Alay started to work in her father's workshop when she was small, and improved her skills in walking stick making through the help of her brother Bülent Korum and sister Ayşegül Yurttadur. Alay combined the expertise she gained in her family workshop where she worked as a master between 1990-2003 with the education she received in the furniture and interior design department of the vocational and technical high school. She received certificates for traditional walking stick making, mastershipship, master instructor and master instructor orientation. 

Alay, who also attended artistic mosaic, nylon thread jewelry making, tile painting/decorating and marbling courses, also received training from wood carving master Ahmet Münir Ayva. Alay was awarded the title of Intangible Cultural Heritage Bearer by the General Directorate of Living Heritage and Cultural Activities of Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 2022. She continues her education at the Turkish Arts Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Afyon Kocatepe University and she has been a master instructor at the Afyonkarahisar Public Education Center and Afyonkarahisar Municipality since 2014.
