Emel Türkmen was born in Istanbul in 1976. She chose Classical Bookbinding Department at Sultan Selim Girls’ Vocational High School in 1990, took bookbinding classes from Ali Kunduracıoğlu and Turkish patterns classes from Hayri Aykutalp. She attended Saadet Gazi’s paper restoration courses at IRCICA in 1993 and received a certificate. Türkmen graduated from the illumination course at Topkapı Palace with the classes she took from Cahide Keskiner, Semih İrteş, Mamure Öz, Melek Antel, Birsen Gökçe, Sevim Kayaoğlu and Serap Bostancı between 1993-1995. Türkmen did the binding and paper restorations of various manuscripts with the help of Ali Kunduracı for six years.
Türkmen started her studies at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University Fine Arts Faculty Traditional Turkish Arts Bookbinding Department in 1994, worked on many different bound covers with the help of Instructor İslam Seçen’s experiences and original molds, and decorated some covers. She took classes from Asst. Prof. Habib İşmen and Kazım Hacımeyliç, started doing illumination minor and benefited from Prof. Faruk Taşkale’s knowledge and researches. She received her license from Taşkale in 2008. She graduated from Traditional Turkish Handicrafts Department in 1998, ranking first in her class, with her thesis titled “The History of Turkish Bookbinding Art and the Properties of 16th and 17th Century Bindings”.
Türkmen participated in many group exhibitions both at home and abroad, some of her works are in private collections. She also has a Sakıp Sabancı Encouragement Award. She gave classes at various institutions and trained many students. Some of the students Türkmen gave license to are Asiye Canbaz, Ayşe Koç, Asuman Coşkun, Betül Akçamollaoğlu Tufan, Nazlı Durmuşoğlu Utku, Melek Sayın, Saliha Dikicier Doğan, Fatma Esra Yeniyurt Öztürk, Emine Sukla Çelikay, Fatma Zehra Yıldız, Şükran Sadoğlu, Zeynep Sevgi Bartın, Emine Meliha Nurman Gündeş, Zeynep Ceylan, Kevser Çetin, Beriyye Yılmaz and Figen Tekiner’dir.
