Gülnihal Küpeli was born in Tokat in 1969. She is a graduate of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University Fine Arts Faculty Traditional Turkish Handicrafts Department. She completed her graduate studies at Marmara University (MU) Institute of Social Sciences with her thesis themed “Comparison of the Muraqqas at Istanbul University Museum Library in Terms of Margin (called ‘koltuk’ in Turkish) Illuminations”, and prepared her thesis themed “Illumination Art in Bayezid II Period” for her proficiency in art/doctorate at MU Institute of Fine Arts. Along with her academic studies and illumination works, she also worked on kalemişi and paper restoration. Küpeli restored and illuminated many khatt plates by the Egyptian Khattat Seyyid İbrahim. She adapted her kalemişi designs, which she made in the classical style at different times, to civil architecture. Küpeli participated in many exhibitions both at home and abroad. Some of her works are at Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum, Turkish Petrol Foundation Museum, Cartwright Hall Art Gallery Bradfort/England and in private collections.
